John Brown

Author Herman Melville called John Brown the “The meteor of the war” because of Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry which was a harbinger of the Civil War. John Brown was an abolitionist and a religious fanatic. Some say that Brown is a martyr while others believe he was a terrorist. Brown believed he was an instrument of God.

In October 1859 Brown and a band of 21 men seized the United States Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown was hanged for this on December 2, 1859 at Charles Town, Virginia.
